The Client:
The Milford School District is located in central Delaware and serves approximately 4,100 students. A rather large district, there are four municipalities: Allendale, Lincoln, Houston and the City of Milford and all of the rural areas within that district.

The Situation:
Ever since 9/11, the Milford School District and its public have had heightened security concerns. The superintendent directed the Director of Operations to make assessments of security at the five school sites. There were concerns about security safety of school buses and the IT security as well. Also, since the schools did not have perimeter fencing, the school officials wanted to make sure that when students are on the grounds or in the building that they remain safe. They also wanted to limit the access for visitors to one main entrance

The Solution:
Advantech completely customized the solution for Milford School District with a fully integrated solution from Honeywell. Initially the relationship with Advantech began with a few cameras at the perimeters of the building and have since increased with interior cameras so that most of the hallways and large areas, such as the cafeteria, and main area are covered with security cameras. It allows the administrators and discipline dean to access the cameras at any time during the day to monitor hallways, and monitor the outside of the building.

After the initial camera installation, Advantech offered more security solutions that meet specific needs of the district. The access control system has card readers with locking hardware throughout the building to control the perimeter. The intrusion detection system allows the officials to arm and disarm the system. And then cameras are integrated with these systems. For example, if you have a camera pointing at a specific door with a card reader, an image would pop up on the access control screen. This way the security personnel can physically see the person present their card and come into the building. If there’s a fire emergency, the integration is tied into the access control system, which releases all the locking hardware for Life Safety.
